FAQs About Eyelid Surgery

Typically, eyelid surgery is performed by removing the hanging skin in the upper eyelids to make the appearance more youthful.  But if needed, the procedure may also entail the removal or redistribution of the fats in the lower eyelids.

But as with any cosmetic surgery, you should expect recovery which will last depending on the extensiveness of the procedure.  To better understand what you should expect during the healing period, these are the most common FAQs of eyelid surgery patients:

1.     Question: Will I be experiencing some pain and discomfort?

Answer: Yes, especially when the anesthesia starts to wear off; also, it is not uncommon to experience some tightness and tenderness around your eyes.  To help you cope with pain and discomfort, your plastic surgeon may recommend painkillers.

2.     Q: Will the surgery affect my vision?

A: After an eyelid surgery, some patients had experienced temporary blurry vision which is often caused by the ointment used to protect the eyes during the procedure.

3.     Q: Can I go home right after my eyelid surgery?

A: More often than not, the answer for this is yes.  As a simple cosmetic surgery, eyelid lift is usually conducted as an outpatient basis, although you should remember that some plastic surgeons are more comfortable if their patients will have an overnight stay at a hospital.

4.     Q: How long should I stay away from strenuous activities?

A: At least avoid rigorous activities within three weeks and take it easy during the first week of your recovery.  However, it is most likely that you can use makeup about 10 days after your eyelid surgery which can cover the bruises around your eyes.

But just to be safe, you have to ask your plastic surgeon on when is the safest time you can resume your normal activities.

5.     Q: What kind of drugs should I avoid?

A: The number one rule is to avoid all types of aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen and naproxen during recovery as they can delay your recovery and increase bleeding.

6.     Q: Is there any recommended sleeping position?

A: Yes.  Ideally, you should keep your head elevated at least a couple of days during your recovery.  With this position, the treated area will receive enough blood flow which in turn paves way to less swelling and faster recovery.

7.     Q: Should I use medications to protect my sensitive eyes?

A: Yes.  If you are experiencing dryness or excessive tearing, your doctor may recommend using wetting solution or eye drops to keep this organ lubricated.  You may also be advised to wear large sunglasses because your eyes will be more sensitive (than usual) to the sun and other elements.
